Hello, Year two, it’s Mrs Hussain, I hope you are all well.
Literacy- Comprehension Read the story below and answer the comprehension questions.
The Birth of the Sun (An Aboriginal Myth)
In the beginning, when the world was new, there was no sun and the humans and animals had to hunt and gather by the light of the dim moon.
One day the brolga and the emu had a huge argument over whose babies were best. The brolga got so furious that she stole one of the emu’s eggs which she threw into the sky. As she threw it into the air it broke open. The yellow yolk burst into flames and lit up the earth. The beauty of the land could be seen for the first time by the people of the sky.
They thought the land was so beautiful that they decided to light a giant fire as soon as the morning star appeared. This didn’t work all the time because on an overcast day the star couldn’t be seen.
The star people decided to ask the Kookaburra to help because of his loud, striking call. He was asked to call every morning so that they knew when to light the sun.
That’s why the kookaburra can be heard first thing every morning before the fire of the sun starts to burn. The fire only lets off a small amount of light and heat as it begins to burn, and gradually it gets hotter and brighter. During the day, after it brightens, the fire begins to burn out, so the light dims again.
It is a strict rule of the Aboriginal tribes that nobody may imitate the Kookaburra's call, because that could offend the bird and it could remain silent. Then darkness would again descend upon the earth and its inhabitants.
Have you heard of the song, written in 1932 about the Kookaburra?
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Merry, merry king of the bush is he,
Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be!

Literacy Your task today is to use what you have learned about writing in past progressive and simple past to either describe this picture or write a story based on the picture.
Don't forget to use full stops and capital letters as lots of you have been forgetting them in the writing you have been sending in.
Maths - Counting forward and backwards from a given number in 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's.
Step 1: Write out the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. Just the answers. E.G. 2, 4, 6....
Step 2: Fill in these missing numbers in the sequences. You will need to work out what times table they are and if the numbers are increasing or decreasing.
Step 3: Finally write the next 5 numbers forward and backwards from the number given .
1. Counting in 2's - Start from...
12 32 6 24
2. Counting in 3's - Start from...
12 27 9 42
3. Counting in 5's - Start from...
15 30 45 20
4. Counting in 10's - Starts from...
30 50 60 110
Topic - Geography and Australia.
Down Under Map
Here are 2 maps. The maps on the left are the maps that are printed in Australia. The maps on the right are the maps that are printed in England.
In Australia they have maps printed with South at the top – so that Australia is near the top and in a prominent position instead of lost somewhere at the bottom! Like on the maps we have in England.
Your task - Make your own map by tracing over a “traditional English” map onto a big piece of tracing paper. (If you don't have tracing paper you can use baking paper!) Then labelling the countries yourself, so that Australia is at the top, not the bottom. This is especially fun to explore and talk about when you hang a “down under” map next to a “traditional” one.
Have a great day, Miss Stevens.

Literacy - Today we are looking at using the present progressive tense. The work is attached below , along with todays Maths task, which is all about ordering numbers from smallest to largest.
Here are some videos that will help you with both.
Go outside ( or stay indoors)
Todays challenge is to stay still and quiet (!) for ten minutes and tune in to what you can hear. Make a list of what you can hear, what is the loudest, quietest or strangest thing happening around you? How does it make you feel to sit still? Did you feel fidgety? Stressed? Calm? Bored? Did you start thinking about something else even? Write down, or talk to someone, about how it made you feel. (When I try to sit still I always get itchy toes!)
Bitesize fun
BBC Bitesize has a fun EMOJI quiz where you have to guess the names of things based on the pictures. Test how well you know you emoji-speak by visiting the website:Emoji Quiz

Hello, Year two, I hope you are well. There is a children’s astronomy session at 3 pm today. Learn all about Asteroids around the stars.
English- Writing in the past tense using simple past and past progressive.
Simple Past tense ( regular verbs end in the suffix ed but many irregular verbs do not)
The past tense tells us about something that has finished in the past.
For example: The small boy cried
My dog jumped over the fence
We cooked mum a special meal.
Past Progressive tense (was/were and ing suffix)
The past progressive tense describes an action that was on progress in the past.
For example: We were playing football.
She was sleeping on the bed.
The sheep were grazing in the field.
Your task is to write sentences in the past tense, that describe the picture.
For example:
The horse was startled by the monster. (simple past)
The robots were landing on the ground. (past progressive)
Extra Extra
Write a story in the past tense using this picture as a prompt.
Maths

English- Past progressive
A verb tense tells us when the action of state described by the verb happened. The three main verb tenses in English are the present, the past, and the future.
The past progressive tense describes actions that happened in the past.
For example :
I was walking.
You were walking.
He was walking.
We were walking.
They were walking.
