Welcome to Autumn Term 1- 5th September 2024
A huge 'well done' to all the Chaffinch children for showing resilience while settling into their Reception class so quickly!
Our first 'Home Project' was to construct a building using sustainable materials. We talked about what items we may have at home that we don't need and are recyclable. After making a list of things we may have at home. The children were great at talking about what they wanted to make. Thank you to all the parents/carers who helped our future environmentally friendly architects!
"A Peppa Pig house." - Luana
"A house in Pakistan." - Noor-Fatimah
"Heart house." - Olivia-Rose
In PE, we loved using the parachute play 'Colour Superheroes,' Our aim was to follow instructions and work as a group to complete a task. Please remember that we have PE on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Children arrive at school, wearing their PE clothes and trainers/plimsoles.
In PSHE, we had a go at the Chime, to help develop our skills of awareness and help us focus on our thoughts and feelings. We held the puzzle piece, Jenie and Jerrie the Cat. Our first theme is - Being Me In My World. We will be looking at Self-Identity, group identity, responsibilities, consequences, teamwork and establishing the Jigsaw Charter.
This week we are reading 'Funnybones.' It's about three skeletons that live in a dark, dark cellar of a dark, dark house on a dark, dark hill and so the word repetition continues. The skeletons venture out of their cellar one night to find someone to scare, but everyone is in bed, so they amuse themselves by scaring each other and playing with the skeleton animals that live in the zoo.
Spooky Disco - Wednesday 30th October 2024
We celebrated Diwali by hearing the story behind the Festival of Lights and why it is celebrated around the world, especially in India. Chaffinch were enthusiastic about dressing up in a sari, putting on bangles and wearing a bindi! They made divas from clay and decorated them with gems. They also made Rangoli patterns, using small pom poms, glitter, rice and lentils.
Through learning about Diwali - goodness over evil and light over darkness, we found out how some objects block the light from going through to form a shadow. We then made a Shadow Puppet Theatre. The children used torches and shadow puppets to create their own shadows.
Welcome to Autumn Term 2!
We are talking about the Rights of the Child and how we are given rights the day we are born. We all have the right to an education (Article 28), the right to be heard (Article 12). The importance of a safe environment and safe space within their class and Mission Grove School.
If you would like to talk about this further with your child, please visit...

During Cultural Dress Up Day we discussed the lovely outfits the children were wearing and which country the clothes represented. We talked about how it does not matter what we look like, where we’re from, what language we speak or in what house we live: we are all equal and have equal rights.
Remembrance Day - Sunday 11th November 2024
We did a 2 minute silence at 11 O'Clock and put up a poppy display on the railings outside, that we made earlier. To make the poppies, we used the ends of plastic bottles, acrylic paint and string.
