The School Council is a group of children who meet regularly to discuss issues within the school. There are two School Councillors from each class in Key Stage 1 and one school councillor from each class in Key Stage 2.
At the beginning of each year, children can nominate themselves for the class vote. Each class votes for their councillor depending on whether or not they are in Key Stage 1 (the 2 children with the highest votes) or Key Stage 2 (the child with the highest vote) is elected as the class representative for the year.
There are 6 councillors in Year 6. They are the School Captains and the Vice Captains, who are voted for by the whole school.
Each councillor meets with their class to discuss ideas about changes and improvements to the school. The issues are then raised in the School Council meetings and councillors discuss how to move forward with these ideas. They vote on different matters and the majority vote is taken forward.
The meetings are run on both North and South sites. Mr Murray leads the North site meetings and Miss Kent leads the South site ones. The children are particularly active when it comes to thinking of ways to help others (Children In Need, Red Nose Day, local charities) and ways of improving the school and providing fun events for all children (school discos, film nights)
Quotes from Councillors Past and Present:
“I like being a School Captain because it gives me a lot of responsibility. I like going to the School Council meetings. I help two children in Swan class with their writing. It was fun going shopping to buy Lucky Dip prizes for Children in Need day.”
Year 6 councillor
“I like being part of the school Council. I get ideas from my class and then take these to the School Council meetings, where I tell the other children and the teachers our ideas. Some of those ideas get to come true. We had a spooky disco and we dressed up for Children in Need Day. This is really fun.”
Year 4 councillor.
“I like helping people then they know how to behave. I really like helping improve the school. It’s loads of fun!
