Hello Year 2.

English

I want you to imagine you are on a trip in Australia. I would like you to write a postcard home. Describe your journey and describe what Australia is like. You can talk about what you saw and the activities you did. You may want to describe the animals that you have seen and the food that you ate. Don’t forget to punctuate your work correctly.

Maths

Today you will be solving test type questions about money.

How would you solve this problem? Read the information carefully and pick out the information that you will need. Kemi buys three fruits and spends £1 exactly. So, I have to find three fruits, where the total of their cost will be £1. Using my number bonds, I know that

7 + 3 = 10, so 70 + 30 = 100

50 added to 20 will make 70. So I can work out that if I buy the apple, banana and orange it will cost me:   20p + 50p + 30p = £1

Therefore, I will tick the apple, banana and orange. You may have worked this out differently, and that is okay. You can use any method you want to work out the answer.

I have attached money test questions below. I would like you to have a go and answer them.

History

I have attached a comprehension, all about Australia Day in the attachments below. Read the text and answer the questions. Carry out research to find out more about Australia day. What other key celebrations are celebrated in Australia and what are the dates?

English - Edit your instructions.

Today we would like you to edit your instructions. Editing is important as it allows you to go back through you work and check it for mistakes. 

First re-read your instructions reading them out-loud to check that they make sense. Have you missed any words out or repeated yourself?

Next check for capital letters and full stops. Listen to this song to help remind you of where they need to be. 

Then check your spellings. Are there any words that you think might be spelt wrong? Either use a dictionary, or ask an adult to help you correct them. 

Finally look at the layout. Have you got a Title? Subheadings? Picture/diagram? Bullet points or numbers? 

Maths - Money, giving change. 

Watch this video all about how to give change. Then complete the activity and  quiz underneath. 

Attached below at the bottom of the page are some work sheets. There are 3 difficulty levels. 1 star, 2 stars and 3 stars. Pick how confident you are and chose a sheet to complete  

Science - Explore the habitat of the Great Barrier Reef. Which living things can you find there!

Using Britannica and some of the videos below to do some research about the great barrier reef. Write some sentences under the sub headings below.

Attached at the bottom of the page is a powerpoint full of information about Uluru for you to read and look through. It also has lots of different artist drawing of it. At the end of the powerpoint are some art instructions of how to draw and create your own picture of Uluru.

English - Writing your own instructions. 

Today we'd like you to write your own instructions.  You can write about one of the things you have made this week or anything else you can think of - how to play your favourite game or how to bake a delicious cake even.  You should include all of these things;

•  A title that explains what the instructions are for.
• A list to show what the reader will need.
• Clear and simple steps that are; in the right order, have time connectives, use imperative verbs (make/use/get/build/mix), are written in the second person and present tense. 
•  A picture or labelled diagram.
•  Subheadings to separate each section. 
• Top tips and safety advice to help the reader. 

Maths - Plan your own trip to Australia.

Have a look at the price lists and decide what you would like to do on your imaginary trip to Australia (maybe you'll go there in the future!). They haven't got it wrong - in Australia they use dollars $, not £ pounds. Add up your total and see how much you will need to save up. 

1) If you save $10 a day how long will it take you to save the money for your trip?

2) Can you make your trip cost less than $3000?

Sport of the day - Target Challenge from London Youth Games. 

Challenge Description:  Lay four pieces of A4 paper/markers on the floor with 1, 2, 4 and 6 written on them. These are your targets. They should be placed 2-3 metres away from you. Once set up, you have 60 seconds to try to hit as many of the targets as possible by throwing or rolling different ball/objects at them.  
Scoring:  Each time you hit a target you will receive the number of points written on that target. 
Adapt for Space and Equipment:  This challenge can be done indoors or outdoors. You can use any type of ball, pairs of rolled up socks, scrunched up paper or any other soft objects. It can be done sitting down or standing up. You can try moving closer or further away or increasing or decreasing the size of the targets to adapt the difficulty.

Using the directions of the compass, can you answer the questions about the different places on this map of Australia?

1) Which landmark is furthest North?

2) Which direction do you travel in to get from Perth to Shark Bay?

3) What is south of the Snowy Mountains?

4) Name 3 things on the East Coast.

5) What is west of the Daintree Forest?

Hello Year two.

English – Following instructions

Today, you will be following instructions. You can follow the instructions to make the Dumper Truck, from yesterday. Or you can watch the video/follow the written instructions to make a pop-up card.

 

 

 

How to Make a Pop-up Card

Equipment

• Card Stock or other heavy-weight paper
• Coloured paper
• White Glue
• Scissors
• Crayons
• Envelope

What to Do

1. Cut a piece of card  to the desired size.

2.Next, fold the card stock in half. Cut two parallel slits on the folded side of the paper, about one inch apart and about one inch long.

3. Next, fold the tab up and crease it.

4. Open up your card. Then pop the paper toward the inside of the card.

5. Cut a piece of coloured paper, the same size or slightly bigger than the card. Glue the card onto the coloured paper. Be sure that you don’t glue the “pop-up” section down.

6. Now decide what you would like to pop of your card. Here are a few ideas:

Today you are going to tell the time for minutes past and minutes to.

Complete one of the worksheets that I have added below. I have also added a test question worksheet as an extra activity.

DT – Making an aboriginal rain stick

Grab a paper towel roll.  Then, cut out a circle from paper that's slightly larger than the circumference of your paper tower roll.  Trace the paper towel roll in the middle of your circle.  Then, cut out about 4 equally spaced slits from the edge of the circle to your traced circle. Attach to end of the tube. Fill tube with rice/popping corn. Attach another paper circle to the other end. Decorate.

Sports Day

If we were back at school this week would include Sports day.I would like you to do a sports activity each day this week. Today, can you create an obstacle course in your garden, or local play area. How long does it take you to complete the obstacle course? Can you beat your time?

Literacy 

This week we will be writing non-fiction instructions. Please watch this bbcbitesize clip to learn the features of instructions. 

Now can you read through these 'How to Make a Dumper Truck' instructions and find the features:

• title
• subheading 
• list of materials you will need 
• bullet points 
• imperative/ ordering verbs 
• pictures
• adjectives (describe nouns/ things e.g. red)
• adverbs (tell you how to do something e.g. carefully)
• numbers
• time connectives

Maths 

This week we will be practising how to tell the time. 

The short hand is the hour hand and the long hand is the minute hand. 

If the long/ minute hand is pointing to 12, it is a full hour or o'clock. 
This clock is showing 5 o'clock. 

If the long/ minute hand is pointing to 6, it has travelled half way round the clock and it is half past. 
This clock is showing half past 2. 

If the long/ minute hand is pointing at 3, it has travelled a quarter of the way round the clock and it is quarter past.
This clock is showing quarter past 10. 

If the long/ minute hand is pointing at 9, it has travelled almost all of the way around the clock. It has only a quarter of the way to go to be a full hour so it is quarter to. 
This clock is showing quarter to 3. 

Why don't you practise your understanding by reading the times shown by these clocks. 

You can also take the batteries out of a clock or watch and practise making o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past times. 

Handwriting 

This week’s handwriting joins are ice and ace.

What words contain these joins? 

Make sure that you are practising these joins in your writing. Remember that all of the letters should be on the line and half the size of a normal line width. 

     

Science

Earlier this year, we learnt about the needs of living things. Have a think about plants and animals and create a poster, video or written explanation that shows what the needs of living things are and why they have these needs.
